I wanted to talk a little bit about an Argentinean artist who I recently discovered: Power Of The Witch AKA Bilil.
Bilil says she's not a musician, and not really a singer, but a dreamer. She was born next to one of the world's biggest meteorite fields, in Argentina, but ended up feeling truly at home in the Highlands of Scotland after spending years in Paris. Most of her creative work - songs, poetry but also paintings - comes from her dreams.
How can you describe a singer's unique voice? Bilil has a fresh sound that sets her apart: a mix of power and directness with cool, impassive tones. All this while at the same time delivering deep emotional lyrics.
Accompanying Bilil on this debut album, are Bruce Cherbit on drums, Antoine Reininger on bass guitar, Alban Sautour and Fred Mariolle on lead guitar, Jean Kapsa on piano and Joel Grare on percussions.
"Listen to the Sand" is a first introduction and it is a powerful statement for a new artist. She sings, "The sand, soft and languid, appeals to the infinite. Over there, in your neck, it runs on hills, bare valleys, and it flows, delicate, caressing each part of skin. There's no beginning nor end". The spacey keys, chimes, and pulsing bass take you away, then the orchestrated strings fill the soundscape. Off to dreamland... "In the deepness of spaces. Listen listen to the sand..."
Let the witch plant a seed in your ear and hear it grow. Definitely head over to Spotify to check Power Of The Witch out.
- Charlie Clark for the Stornoway Gazette -
Far out in the ocean, where the water is as blue as the prettiest cornflower, it is very, very deep...
There was a time / I was a child lost and alone / Dry ocher clay and sharp stone / You came to me walking under the burning sun / Your words will bloom in springtime / In this arid garden, in this seedless garden / I'll be sleeping on a leaf / Fall will catch me shivering/ In the safety of this garden / This quiet, windless garden...
The sand / Soft and languid / Appeals to the infinite / Over there / In your neck / It runs on hills / Bare valleys / And it flows / Delicate / Caressing each part of skin / In the deepness of spaces / Listen listen to the sand / And on boundless distances / Listen listen to the sand / There's no beginning nor end...
